19th Century Plum Pudding Mahogany Kneehole Chest

19th Century Plum Pudding Mahogany Kneehole Chest

English

circa 1860 - 1870

Mid 19th century mahogany inlaid kneehole chest of drawers.

The rectangular top is veneered with plum-pudding, crossbanded with mahogany, box wood stringing and crossbanded in coromandel. The full length mahogany lined drawer is crossbanded and repeated with coromandel, plum pudding and boxwood stringing through out.

The top single drawer is arranged above two fixed pedestals that flank a recessed cupboard with three short graduated drawers that terminate on mahogany veneered ogee bracket feet.

The recessed cupboard retains a single shelf and the drawers retain the original locks, escutcheons and gilt brass drop handles with the kneehole chest having a width of 36cm or 14.5 inches with the recessed cupboard retaining a single shelf.

The Victorian chest is a George III Chippendale revival of its day, with the 19th century embellishments of the exotic coromandel wood being deployed as a lively addition.
