Extremely Rare Anglo Indian Calamander Davenport

Extremely Rare Anglo Indian Calamander Davenport

Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) Southern India

circa 1846 - 1856

Mid 19th century grand scale davenport from Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon).

The flat surface to the top section is fitted with the original calamander gallery with the fall opening to reveal a leather base to the interior floor and fitted calamander drawers. The secretaire drawers are fitted with ring pull handles, brass knobs and the original gilt brass locking hinge which holds the fall up the writing surface, which is generous and sits above the recessed panelled cupboards below.

The cupboard doors are flanked with solid carved faux supports and the cupboard itself is located between the turned and carved solid supports that create the kneehole design. The cupboard opens to reveal an arrangement of open shelves or pigeon holes of various sizes. These shelves are made in the solid and provide good storage.

The davenport sits on a highly figured and veneered plinth base above symmetrical block feet which are simulated to look like calamander and sit on concealed castors.

The piece is of high quality and the over use of the veneer indicates its craftsmanship and perhaps the unknown provenance of the original purchaser.

Unknown, possibly a one-off piece, completely unique!
