William IV Mahogany Settee in the Rococo Style made by Gillow

William IV Mahogany Settee in the Rococo Style made by Gillow

By GILLOWS OF LANCASTER & London

England

circa 1835

This fine antique settee is typical of early 18th century Rocco George II furniture, which Gillows fashioned in the early 19th Century often making a suite of furniture on commission for a country seat. The carved settee has recently been beautifully upholstered in a Gainsborough silk, reflecting
the interiors of the day.

Note: The present settee relates to the celebrated suite of giltwood furniture supplied by Gillows to the Earls Fitzwilliam for the Whistlejacket Room at Wentworth Woodhouse. The recent discovery of the 1833 payment to Gillows for the Wentworth Woodhouse suite confirms this traditional attribution.
