Superb 19th Century Fiddleback Mahogany Library Desk Stamped Gillows

Superb 19th Century Fiddleback Mahogany Library Desk Stamped Gillows

English

circa 1860

The rectangular metamorphic leather top with a reading rachetted lectern to the is front flanked by two small leather pads, with a full length brass and steel mechanised pull-out reading folio ratchet lectern to the reverse. The recently re-lined green leather top sits above one long and two short mahogany lined drawers to the front and faux drawer fronts to the reverse, with concealed pull out slides to the ends above well figured panelled sides. The ring-pulled handles are a later addition and not original to the library desk. The concealed locking pilasters to the front will lock all four graduated drawers to each pedestal with matching locking mechanisms to the inset panelled cupboard doors to the reverse.

The highly figured pedestal cupboard doors open to reveal a single shelf. The pedestals are flanked with mahogany arches and have the maker's impress mark stamped on the desk twice 'Gillow'. The library desk, as far as we know, is bespoke and a complete one off.
