Stunning Victorian Aesthetic Carved Walnut Hall Seat Bench Attributable to Gillows of Lancaster & London

England

circa 1860 - 1880

The walnut hall seat with dome shaped semi-elliptical ears and a breakfront top rail sits above three fielded panels and swept out arms that terminate on crisply carved lion heads supported on ring turned and carved uprights. The leather upholstered seat is hinged and lifts up to reveal a cupboard space. The figured walnut vertical slats to the base are flanked and divided by large carved acanthus leaf motifs and stand on fantastical walnut paw feet.
