Stunning Nineteenth Century Burr Walnut Wellington Chest of Drawers

The wellington chest is stamped C.Hindley & Sons 134 Oxford St London and numbered 52237. The top is veneered with a tight grained burr walnut and sits above highly figured book-matched walnut veneered drawers. The drawer linings are cedar with ash sides and are of the highest quality. The drawer fronts carry the original solid walnut handles and the wellington chest is fitted to the right-hand side with a single hinged locking pilaster and sits on a burr walnut veneered plinth. The sides are made of straight grain walnut.

Charles Hindley & Sons, rug and floor cloth manufacturers (Furniture History Society, Dictionary of English Furniture Makers, pp. 433 & 606) took over the firm of Miles & Edwards, cabinetmakers, of 134 Oxford Street in 1844. Thereafter, they established trade at the Oxford Street premises where their business as high quality cabinet makers flourished, earning them a Royal Appointment, and a part in the Great Exhibition.
