Set of Ten Irish Mahogany Dining Chairs

Set of Ten Irish Mahogany Dining Chairs

Irish

circa 1820 - 1830

A rare and unusual set of ten carved mahogany mid 19th century dining chairs.
The uprights to the chairs are supported with crisply carved floral decoration to the top rail with stiff leaf and turned moulding to the middle centre back rail above stuff over seats that have been recently reupholstered and recovered in a crimson and gold fabric. The dining chairs stand on solid turned and carved front legs with the carvers sharing the same turned and carved upright supports. The carvers have great detail on the scrolled ends with crisply moulded rosettes.

The chairs are really most unusual and we believe them to be made around the Cork area of southern Ireland. They are profusely and richly carved and are certainly not colonial The chairs have been made with a beech frame rather than a mahogany frame which would have indicated a colonial chair, hence why we believe them to be European and from the south of Ireland.

Condition

The set of ten dining chairs are in remarkable condition with all the seat rails being original. The chairs have suffered no breaks or splits and have been all knocked apart and re-glued and are now in excellent order.
