England
circa 1820
Pair of chairs made in American walnut with carved walnut roundels and reeded frames with upholstered arms. The outswept supports and seat rails are unusual in design as are the finely tapered legs with inset walnut panels. The legs are tapered from the inside only, which is seen on late 18th and early 19th Century English furniture. The outswept back legs have been repaired and the front legs re-tipped. The overall statue of chairs is in the fashion of George Bullock and the Napoleonic style that furnished Napoleon’s residence in St Helena in 1818.
