Pair of 18th Century Dutch Walnut, Fruitwood and Marquetry Chairs

Pair of 18th Century Dutch Walnut, Fruitwood and Marquetry Chairs

Netherlands

circa 1720

The scrolled waisted backs are centered with vase shaped splats, headed with substantial carved capitals. The seats, with their carved shaped aprons to the fronts, are raised on beautifully carved and moulded front cabriole legs ending with ‘hoof’ feet. The later inlay to the legs probably occurred some time in the 18th century, the splayed back feet are supported by shaped ‘H’ stretchers. The chairs are delicately inlaid throughout with marquetry depicting figural scenes, mythical birds and flora and retain excellent colour and patination.
