Nineteenth Century Carved Anglo Indian Inlaid Ebony ‘Tortoise Shell’ Box

Nineteenth Century Carved Anglo Indian Inlaid Ebony ‘Tortoise Shell’ Box

Ceylon

circa 1860 - 1870

The Anglo Indian box is made from the fully grown shell of an Indian Star Tortoise that probably washed up on the beaches of Ceylon. The craftsman of the day sort to reuse this beautiful shell to create a wonderful inlaid box. The hinged lid opens to reveal a single ebony lidded compartment, and is surmounted with boxwood, ebony and brown teak inlays. The carved legs and inlaid tortoise head are made from solid ebony. This piece is a rare caddy example.
