The top tier of the music stand has a rise and fall slope fitted with a finely worked brass ratchet for adjustment. The music stand is raised on beautifully carved ring-turned tapered corner supports, ending with typical 'Gillow' lobed reeded feet, and has the original concealed brass castors. The sides are fitted with brass column supports to complement the highly figured veneers, a feature only seen on the very best pieces. Probably made for a London house, this elegant piece is of exceptional quality and in superb condition.
Literature
Gillows pointedly described this particular design as a 'music stand', not as a 'what-not', although clearly it can be used as both. They illustrated several different designs for this piece in their estimate sketch books between 1820 - 1830, with 'A high music stand with an elevated top' being illustrated in 1823.
