Mid 18th Century Rococo Mirror

Mid 18th Century Rococo Mirror

circa 1755 - 1765

George II carved giltwood 18th century period mirror.

A large central open fret shell surmounted on 'C' scrolls and a bold 'S' shaped over hanging leaf carving. The lattice work flanks the large open fret shell and carved rosettes. The shoulders are dressed with trailing flowers above climbing acanthus leaf decoration and large openly carved and fretted 'C' scrolls.

The 18th century mercury plate is clear but does have some age to the corners. The overall frame is decorated with piercings and the apron displays matched overhanging leaf carvings, flanking a crisply carved inverted shell.

Excellent. The old 18th century plate is probably not the original and the old Victorian gilt and gold paint has been cleaned off, re-gilded and gessoed to bring the mirror back to life.
