By William Barrow, senior
England
circa 1826
The chairs have been carved in the solid with tulips, shells, scrolls, knolls and elaborate leaf decoration. The goncalo alves varies in colour with the natural light and dark highlights working beautifully with the profuse carving. The recently re-upholstered drop-in seats stand on reeded and turned legs.
All the chairs are stamped with the maker's initials W.B. (William Barrow). The outstanding quality and overall design of the chairs is typical of Gillows work and they could even be 5 years earlier than stated because Gillow were very innovative and ahead of their rivals when it came to design.
The chairs are of outstanding quality as you would expect from a top class craftsman that worked for Gillows of Lancaster.
