England
circa 1885
The mahogany mirror has two doves above a carved centre motif that has a ribbon with a burning torch and a quiver full of arrows above a decorative scrolled centre piece. The figurines that flank the original bevelled plate represent the Greek goddesses of love Aphrodite and Venus and below the crisply carved floral decoration with scrolled acanthus leaf and rosettes is fixed with a central shell.
Excellent with a good colour and is of the highest quality.
The two doves symbolize enduring, ever-faithful love which probably arose from the knowledge that turtle doves mate for life and spend a lot of time engaging in affectionate behaviors. The flaming torch is an ancient symbol of life, truth and the regenerative power of fire while the quiver of arrows signifies the ability to use force in the pursuit of justice. The 'Greek' and 'Roman' Goddesses Aphrodite & Venus both represented love, sex, beauty and fertility.
