This winter hedgerow was drawn using a 0.13mm 'Rotring' technical pen, using Indian ink. Each branch would be drawn from the top, the thinnest branches first, working downwards and building it up, engaging a 0.25mm pen to fill in the bigger branches lower down. Overall, I worked from right to left, gradually creating more and more branches/trees until I felt a nicely balanced ‘panorama’ or ‘view’ had been achieved. This piece resembles a typical winter hawthorn style hedgerow, which can be seen in large areas of the countryside. This idealised image is a play between the beauty it creates, even after these hedgerows are severely controlled by us. However, they battle on a fragile path and one hopes that these special nature reserves are kept for years to come. It is also somewhat idealised with very little, if no, clutter in the undergrowth.
