Italy
circa 1860
The applied carvings and rosettes to the top of the mirror sit either side of a raised platform, flanked by crisply carved leaf decoration to sides of the mirror. The tightly crimped moulding to the rectangular frame is repeated, as a larger thumbnail crimp moulding and highlighted in oil gilding and offers a perfect contrast to the oil on canvas and the original mirror plate below. The classical Roman scene above the mirror is purely a decorative grand tour souvenir piece and is not signed and was probably brought back from Italy and made with the frame and mirror sometime in the mid 19th century.
The mirror in country house condition. The gilding, carving and oil on canvas all in an original un-refreshed state.
