Grand George IV Mahogany Music Canterbury

Grand George IV Mahogany Music Canterbury

circa 1826

The canterbury is free-standing with crisply turned gadrooned baluster supports to all four sides, solid mahogany top rails and a centre splat carry handle. The canterbury's oversized but elegant proportions are complimented but the intense quality given to such an everyday piece of 19th century English urniture. The inset beaded panels with flamed mahogany veneers are typical of Gillows. The full length mahogany drawer with original lock and turned knobs sits above a turned gadrooned moulding. The canterbury stands on beautifully carved knolled legs and gilt brass castors.

Although the canterbury is not stamped by the maker, there is enough evidence to attribute confidently Gillows of Lancaster as the makers. The overwhelming quality of the timber, the gilt-brass castors and the unique design can be found in Susan Stuart's book Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840 Page 92, Plate 639.
