George III Period Mahogany & Satinwood Inlaid 18th Century Breakfront Secretaire Bookcase

George III Period Mahogany & Satinwood Inlaid 18th Century Breakfront Secretaire Bookcase

England

circa 1790

The arched domed pediment is inlaid and banded with a centre panel decorated with flowers and cross-banded with tunbridgeware style inlay, above a cross-banded frieze. The four mahogany astragal glazed doors are banded with West Indian satinwood and ebony stringing and feature a gothic style glazing arrangement that Gillows of Lancaster produced from their workshops. The bottom section of the breakfront bookcase consists of two short and one long secretaire drawers above faded flamed mahogany and satinwood banded cupboard doors that sits on a plinth base. The leather lined secretaire is fitted with satinwood drawers and pigeon holes with an inlaid centre cupboard door.

The bookcase retains the original handles but does not have the original shelves. The bookcase has been electrified and fitted with glass shelves to accommodate porcelain or other such collections.

Note.
The secretaire breakfront bookcase was possibly made for a Irish client and probably made by a cabinet maker such as Gillows of Lancaster and London.
