George III Mahogany & Rosewood Wine Cellaret attributable to Gillows

George III Mahogany & Rosewood Wine Cellaret attributable to Gillows

England

circa 1800

The figured mahogany top is cross-banded in rosewood with boxwood stringing below a vertical veneered mahogany frieze. The top opens to reveal divisions for wine bottles and has a replaced lead lining that still has a centre plug to release melted water. The cellaret is finished front to back with rosewood inset panels and boxwood mouldings surrounded by mitred mahogany veneered joints and retains the original lion's' head carrying handles to the sides. The cellaret carries the original gilt brass fittings throughout and stands on finely reeded and turned legs that terminate on brass capped castors.
