George III Hepplewhite Design Mahogany Parlour Chair Attributable to Gillow

By GILLOWS OF LANCASTER & London

England

circa 1765

The shielded back with four crisply carved splats emanate from the centre support, with two out-swepted back legs. The fine reeded swept-back arms, with upturned leaf carved supports and plain oval medallions that stand above finely tapered reeded legs on elegant spade feet with an original seat frame that has been recently reupholstered in soft black leather. Gillows of Lancaster do illustrate similar chairs in their sketch books from 1785 and can be found at the City of Westminster’s Archive Centre, London.
