Fine Regency Mahogany and Ebony Partner’s Desk

Fine Regency Mahogany and Ebony Partner’s Desk

circa 1815

A quite superb example of Regency furniture, the desk is finished in highly figured mahogany with solid ebony reeded turned handles and retains rich colour and patination. Unusually, the desk top with its reeded edge and later fitted tooled black hide, has been designed with a lidded compartment above the dummy central frieze drawer, suggesting that the desk was a commissioned bespoke piece of furniture. This notion is supported with the design to the sides and rear of the desk. Whilst the front, as you would expect, is finished with four graduated working drawers to each pedestal, the opposing sides are each fitted with a dummy drawer together with a long working drawer. The back of the desk, again, is unusual with three dummy drawers to the frieze to accommodate the side drawers, and below a cupboard door to each pedestal enclosing English oak sliding 'Portfolio' dividers. The desk is raised on its original brass castors The desk, with its fine architectural detail, excellent proportions and design, is a statement piece of Regency furniture of the highest quality.
