Exceptional Regency Period Mahogany Tilt-Top Dining Table attributable to Gillows of London and Lancaster

Exceptional Regency Period Mahogany Tilt-Top Dining Table attributable to Gillows of London and Lancaster

England

circa 1810

The beautifully figured top retains rich colour and patination. The book-matched mahogany veneers are cross-banded with a generous mahogany band below the veneered frieze which supports a thick reeded edge. The tilt-top table with its original gilt brass latch sits on the saddle that is supported by a beautifully turned vase shaped pedestal with crisply carved hipped reeded downswept legs terminating in the original gilt brass foliate castors. The 'hipped' sabre legs seen on this table are a feature of Irish tables of the period. NB The distinctive design of the hipped sabre legs can be seen on a table at Glin Castle, County Limerick, Ireland, the table being illustrated in 'Great Irish Houses and Castles' by J. O'Brien & D. Guinness, published in London 1992, p.152. Gillow supplied furniture to Glin Castle in the early 19th Century.
