Early George II Metamorphic Mahogany Bachelor’s Cabinet

Early George II Metamorphic Mahogany Bachelor’s Cabinet

England

circa 1730

The solid mahogany tops are hinged and open out onto a supporting gate-leg mechanism. The first of the tops open out to a solid mahogany surface. The second top opens out on top of the first leaf and reveals a leather surface. The secret bureau is only revealed when the brass knobs are pulled out on the sides of the cabinet to release the metamorphic mechanism allowing the bureau to spring up. The cabinet/bureau stands on bold tapered legs on pad feet with an elegant shaped frieze.
