Anglo Chinese Secretaire Bookcase

Anglo Chinese Secretaire Bookcase

China Trade

circa 1820 - 1830

Early 19th century Anglo Chinese export camphor wood secretaire bookcase. The reeded top edge sits above glazed doors that open to reveal a single velvet lined bookshelf. The door frames are decorated with bone stringing and the bookcase top is fitted with the original gilt brass carrying handles. The bookcase retains the original velvet lining and sits above four drawers. The fully fitted secretaire drawer retains the original turned horn knobs, a central inlaid door that opens to reveal an open space with a small drawer below. The arched pigeon holes are flanked by shaped dividers that sit above a bank of three drawers consisting of one long and two small drawers. The small right hand drawer conceals pen and ink fittings. The old green baize is probably not the original but is certainly patinated. The three full length drawers below the secretaire are also inlaid with bone stringing and brass plate handles and retain the original steel locks and escutcheons. The bookcase is raised on crisply turned and reeded bun feet and is fitted with the original gilt brass carry handles. The secretaire bookcase is made in three sections.

Made for the Western market this camphor wood secretaire bookcase is designed in the European taste.
