An Early 19th century Cream colour Japanned Workbox

English

circa 1825 - 1835

An early 19th century cream colour Japanned workbox.

A Regency Japanned and chinoiserie lacquered workbox of grand scale and design. The hinged lid is beautifully decorated with chinoiserie figures in front of a typical Japanese building, whilst a ceremony of some kind is being enacted. There are still traces of all the original colours and gilt present. The sides and front are beautifully decorated with architectural designs, pagoda buildings, and figurines to the front doors whilst the back is decorated with a floral pattern. The workbox opens to reveal flowers and further architectural designs with trees and it retains its original cream colour which, as you can see, is very different to the outer skin. The three drawers open and retain the original handles. The top also opens to reveal compartments, with the lid being finished in a silk damask. The workbox is incredibly rare given its size and stands on the original gilt brass feet.
