England
circa 1820
This example is identical to the metamorphic chair in the library at Tatton Park, both chairs having a fitted lever locking mechanism to the bottom step, probably made for Gillow by Copes, and not seen on any other metamorphic chair. The scrolled ends to the bowed splat are exquisitely carved and typical of the high quality of work achieved by the Gillow workshop. This was the great age for metamorphic furniture, and this chair which retains great colour and patination, is a superb example of the genre.
