Late Regency George IV gilded & painted burr maple marble top console table attributed to George Morant.

The cream and burgundy veined marble top is original to the console table and sits above a decorated frieze which is supported by two crisply carved and scrolled gilt painted legs. The concave burr maple plinth base with parcel gilt decoration is highly figured and the console table is in the style of 'The Day' when George IV commissioned the re-decoration of the apartments of Windsor Castle when he became King in 1826.

GEORGE MORANT OF BOND STREET LONDON (1770-1846)
George Morant's firm supplied furniture to various members of the Royal family including a State Bed for Queen Adelaide in 1838. Amongst other distinguished clients were the Marquess of Londonderry and the Duke of Sutherland at Stafford House. The Duke of Sutherland was famous for his superb art collection and the redevelopment of his London home, now called Lancaster House. The Duke commissioned a sequence of gilt and white rooms as the centre piece of his redevelopment and Morant was among the cabinet-makers who supplied furniture.

A related centre table with satinwood, carved giltwood and ivory paintwork stamped G. I. Morant, 91 New Bond St. was illustrated in the Grosvenor House Antiques Fair Handbook, 2000, pg. 146 by Stair and Company.

The marble is quite possibly 'Trets' and was quarried by Lazare Verrier in Saint -Jean-du-Puy, Bouches-du-Rhone in France. The quarry was opened in the 17th century.
