George III Mahogany inlaid Serpentine Chest
The caddy top chest is quarter-veneered in figured book matched flamed mahogany, cross banded in padouk with herringbone inlays on canted corners above a full length brushing slide and 'axe' head handles. The brushing slide is lined and most practical for folding clothes and sits above four long graduated drawers.
The drawer fronts retain the original silvered ring turned back plates and ring pulled handles although they have faded over the last two hundred handles. The oak lined drawers have gilt brass locks and oak bases with vertical mahogany cut veneers padouk cross banding and barber stringing to the drawer fronts.
The blind fret carving to the canted corners and book-matched straight grain mahogany veneers to sides sit above a thumb nail moulding.
The caddy chest is raised on a shaped mahogany apron to the front and sides that terminate on elegant bracket feet.
The chest is rather unusual in its veneer design and possibly suited in its design to earlier walnut caddy chests, for example a bachelors chest or such like early George I/George II furniture.
