William IV Rosewood Duet Music Stand after the designs of Loudon of London

William IV Rosewood Duet Music Stand after the designs of Loudon of London

English

circa 1840 - 1850

Early 19th century duet music stand in the manner of John Claudius Loudon.

A duet music stand with simple ratchet design lectern with adjustable height ring turned and reeded pedestal column above a faceted collar above a solid rosewood circular plinth base.

An illustration of this design can be found in J.C. Loudon's Encyclopaedia of Cottage, Farm and Villa Architecture and Furniture, 1833, fig. 1973, p.102 and most likely is derived from the design of a fire screen.

Literature

J.C. Loudon did not create his own furniture designs; instead, his Encyclopaedia of Cottage, Farm, and Villa Architecture and Furniture, published in 1833, detailed appropriate fixtures and furnishings for various dwellings, including descriptions of appropriate styles and types of furniture considered suitable for different levels of homes, from humble cottages to grand villas. The work, which features over 2,000 illustrations, aimed to improve domestic dwellings by explaining interior design principles and appropriate furniture choices for a broad readership.
