William IV Rio Rosewood Eight Seater Octagonal Centre/Dining Table

England
Circa 1835
The octagonal table top has a lustrous collection of book-matched rosewood veneers with flecks of reflective minerals that have naturally become embedded into the grain. The top edge has a solid carved 'Egg & Dart' moulding that sits above a shallow carved and figured rosewood frieze. The tilt-top table sits on a profusely carved pedestal base with large scrolls on a quadriform plinth base. The crisply carved scroll feet stand on concealed brass castors.

Provenance

Note: Although the table is probably by Gillow it is not stamped. The use of the finest materials on the market at the time, the quality of the carving and the overall design all point to the workshops of Gillow. We believe the rosewood to be Brazilian because of the presence of tiny flecks of minerals within the grain of rosewood which was clearly absorbed during the life of the tree.
