Superb Pair of 19th Century Regency Period Gilt Brass 'Bacchanalian' Candlesticks

England
Circa 1815
The large pair of gilt candlesticks with cast thistle cup candle holders are adorned with vine leaves and grapes. The stems each consist of a twisting vine with leaves and bunches of young grapes. The vine stems emerge from rising leaves and a diamond motif collar. The bacchanalian candlesticks are cast on the bases with the Greek god 'Bacchus'.

NB The Romans celebrated Bacchus with wine, songs dance and more wine. Bacchus was the god of grape harvest and wine making.
