Louis XV Period Kingwood & Ormolu Serpentine Mounted Bombe Marble-Top Commode

This very fine commode retains its original carved and shaped 'Caunes Speckled Grey' marble above three drawers with parquetry veneers of contrasting colour. The drawer fronts with decorative foliate gilt bronze handles and escutcheons in the Rococo style. The bombé sides similarly decorated with parquetry inlay. The corners further decorated with similar gilt bronze mounts terminating in sabots on the splayed feet. The commode retaining a period eighteenth century moulded marble top.

Provenance

The Caunes Speckled Grey marble vein is now exhausted and no longer mined in Aude, France. The beautiful marble has been used for the fireplace of the Salon Dore of the prefecture of Auch, Gers and the fireplace of Petit Salon de Louis XVI at the Chateau de Compiengne.
