Irish George III Carved Chippendale Period Mahogany & Amarillo Games Table

Irish George III Carved Chippendale Period Mahogany & Amarillo Games Table

England

circa 1760 - 1770

An exceptional Chippendale period mahogany & amarillo card table of excellent colour, veneers and some original patination and finish. The solid quilted mahogany "amarillo" shaped rectangular top with out-stepped front corners and a rounded edge is carved in the solid and opens to reveal a baize lined playing surface.
The well figured and shaped frieze is veneered in amarillo "quilted mahogany" and centred with a crisply carved motif of a C scroll and rococo leaf decoration. The mahogany carved cabriole legs are decorated with C scrolls, flowers and stiff leaf decoration to the knee and frieze whilst standing on ball and claw feet.

Chippendale used the Amarillo "Quilted Mahogany" veneer on a George III pembroke table, Illustrated, Christies, Dumfries House, A Chippendale Commission, Volume 1, Session one, Thursday 12 July 2007, Lot 33.
Dumfries House was home to Lord Dumfries and later on the Earl of Bute. Dumfries House is recognised as the most important collection of works from Thomas Chippendale's Director period.
