George IV Late Regency Mahogany Secretaire Cabinet

GEORGE SMITH CABINET MAKER (1786-1826)
England
Circa 1826
The cabinet is of rare design and is almost certainly copied from the original George Smith drawing as seen here.

The fixed bookshelves with gadrooned mouldings and mahogany gallery are underpinned by carved and out-swept supports and fitted to the secretaire cabinet.

The fitted secretaire has rosewood drawers and ivory turned handles which are original and sit above a recently re-covered black leather writing surface. The flamed mahogany cross-banded veneers to the sides are unusual and closely follow the George Smith design. The cupboard doors are panelled and pleated and fitted with the original brass grills. The doors are flanked by crisply carved and reeded capitals and stand on a gadrooned moulded plinth fitted with the George Smith ‘trade mark’ carved block feet.
