Early 19th century Regency period pollard oak and ebony davenport.
The davenport top has the original gilt brass gallery above a black tooled leathered writing slope. The rectangular pollarded oak top is veneered with a solid ebony thumb-nail bevelled edge above a highly figured burr oak frieze. The frieze is fitted on the right hand side with a concealed ink and stationery tray that pulls out when unlocked.
The four full length mahogany-lined graduated drawers retain the original Bramah locks and keys. The davenport has matching faux drawers to the reverse side and the burr oak panels to the front and rear which are recessed with solid ebony mouldings.
The davenport stands on shaped bun feet and concealed brass castors.
Literature
George Bullock (1777-1828) His most famous commission was to supply all the furniture and furnishings for Great Tew Park near Banbury in Oxfordshire between 1816 and 1818 for the then new owner, Mathew Robinson Boulton. All the furniture supplied was made of either oak or holly. The davenport is similar in construction and style to a writing table supplied by George Bullock for the library at Great Tew in 1817. Ref.
